can i say how much i am enjoying seeing jan on mtv again? she is their artist of the week and all the promotion they are doing for her new album discipline almost inspires me to forgive them for treating jan like some outcast the last couple of years. here is a cool mix of her 1995 top 10 hit runaway. check it out!

triple threats seldom exist in today's industry. jasmine guy was an accomplished actor and dancer when warner bros. heard her vocal skills and signed her to a record deal. the album was packed with new jack tunes that rivaled the divas of the time. unfortunately, in 1990 radio was resistant to actor-turn-singers. another like my lover was the second of four singles released from the album. here is the single mix of the tune. check it out!

hailing from brooklyn, ny, former nurse cheryl pepsii riley got her start in the music business with the help of full force. she reached the peak position of the charts in 1988 with the sensitive thanks for my child. My personal fave cheryl track is the anti-dmoestic violence song how can you hurt the one you love from her sophmore album. guess i'm in love is a slammin' new jack song that unfortunately failed at both pop and r&b radio. if you haven't heard it, check it out! if you have, then you know what i mean!

in the summer of 1988, the only thing that mattered to me was my karyn white cassette. it was first piece of music i had ever purchased and played until my mother's ears bled! karyn white began her career as a jazz singer and then scored a major record deal with warner bros. records and her career was guided by mr. benny "i left jlo for mariah" medina. her first two singles the way you love me and superwoman were massive hits on both pop and r&b charts. secret rendevous was no exception. proudced by l.a. reid and babyface, the single continuted karyn's hit parade and help her self titled debut album reach platnium plus status. here's to miss white!

during my years as a dancer/choreographer, i met some really interesting people. judy is definately one of them. i remember one show in 1997 while i was dancing for lil suzy, we performed with judy at a benefit concert. ms. judy walked in to backstage area of the club, make-up done up to and from the high heavens. she sat down and asked if we could give her room so that her "people" could do her make-up. honey, she sat in a chair, 4 queens (who were also her dancers for the night) began to blow-dry and press her hair (that was already done), paint her nails (that were already painted) and do her make-up over her already made-up face. everyone looked and remained silent. i, on the other hand screamed, "werq bitch!" here is my fave judy song. enjoy!

as a diva lover, i wanted to love ms. nicole. i was ready to take her in and add her to my long list of pretty divas who can hold a note and move a little. then i heard her material and was horrified by just how corny it was. of course babylove is not half bad, but the other songs that have leaked from her now ill-fated debut album were horrible. right when i counted her out, i heard this who's gonna love you tune. to my surprise, my utter surprise, i freakin' like the song! i am not sure if this is the final mix, but if it is not, it sounds hella good. check it out!

in 1991, mc hammer signed b angie b and released her debut album on his capitol records distributed bust it imprint. combining a strong appreciation of classic soul with a high-tech hip-hop production style, the album was the essence of neo-soul. the lead single, the emotions remake i don't wanna lose your love became a minor hit, but angie's sales didn't quite satisfy capitol--and she was dropped from the label a little over a year later. b angie b, along with michel'le, is also credited in small circles with being one of the first female artists to sing r&b vocals over strong hip-hop/rap tracks, a sound that would later make mary j. blige an icon.

before her fantastic role as wilhelmina slater on abc's hit show ugly betty, vanessa williams was a dance diva who survived experiences that would have destroyed a weaker diva. in 1988 vanessa released her first single, the title track from her debut album the right stuff. needless to say, everyone in the industry was skeptical. after all, up until that time vanessa was known as the first black miss america who was forced to resign due to the release of several nude photos she took as a student at syracuse univeristy. with the release of her album, the industry discovered a promising and noteworthy pop/soul singer with a sweet soulfulness. the title track, slammin' to say the least, was an out-of-the-box smash on the r&b and dance charts. the single was a modest hit on the pop chart just missing the top 40. the album eventually went gold and earned her three grammy award nominations.
