.:40 years of stone wall:.

On Friday evening, June 27, 1969, the New York City tactical police force raided a popular Greenwich Village gay bar, the Stonewall Inn. Raids were not unusual in 1969; in fact, they were conducted regularly without much resistance. However, that night the street erupted into violent protest as the crowds in the bar fought back. The backlash and several nights of protest that followed have come to be known as the Stonewall Riots.

Prior to that summer there was little public expression of the lives and experiences of gays and lesbians. The Stonewall Riots marked the beginning of the gay liberation movement that has transformed the oppression of gays and lesbians into calls for pride and action. In the past forty years we have all been witness to an astonishing flowering of gay culture that has changed this country and beyond, forever.

i am here because of stonewall. i can dance with my man, i can hold his hand because the stones that were thrown only provided the motivation for queens like me to sit on a throne. pay homage. change for one is change for all.

this was the fourth single released from her 1994 life goes on album. although added to q102 in philadephia, the song, produced by victor franco (where the hell has he been lately) failed to make a national impact. personally, i think the single would have received massive airplay had it been released as the second single, following the h0t 100 charting promise me. this song remains of my faves. enjoy! oh yeah, remember to head over to amazon or itunes to check out her new single dance tonight.

.:just like mike:.

such human nature it was to dance our backs from off the wall
when your voice commanded us
to dance, shout and shake our bodies down to the ground.
man, you walked on the moon before our eyes
and we said "damn, that boy is bad!"

so dangerous it was to be so young and famous
in a world so ready to pick you apart
until you were workin' day and night
to piece together the man in the mirror.
but you never lost your jam
even as you searched for your childhood gone too soon.
you managed to help heal the world
even when healing yourself proved to be impossible.
and so like butterflies,
i am left in awe as you fly away.
so instead of saying goodbye,
i say thank you.
rest in peace.
rest in piece.
rest.

i went back and fourth on if i said post this or not. my reservations were that he has, in the past, made homophobic statements. but as i grow old gracefully, and i mean hella gracefully, i realize that is not always fair to measure a person simply by the weight of their words. so because the universe has provided me with several chances when i stated things that were classist, sexist and even homophobic, i will do the same for mr. rhymes. so with that said, this song is hot! :-) thanks boogie! you spoil me, you know!

i am coining 2009, the year of the diva - the real divas! mariah, toni and whitney are all slated to release new material this year. you can now add the super and multi-talented vanessa williams, who has just released her 8th studio album the real thing. the collection is for the grown and sexy, and no one knows grown and sexy more than the lovely lady v. here is an absolutely delightful tune (courtesy of my best friend and fellow neighbor of the blog, rob). enjoy! and remember, every time you a buy a diva's album, a drag queen get her crown. :-)

the first time i flew on a plane was in 1995 on my way to chicago for a show with soniya. back then i was dancing with maritza (she would go on to record a couple of tunes with taz including a song i co-wrote entitled sometimes). it was a blast, although we stayed at some run-down hotel that probably charged by the hour lol. one of my fave routines was for this tune. i'd give anything to perform these songs again but soniya no longer sings secular music. here's to the 90s. here's to my teen years. here's to freestyle! special thanks to sandro @ http://freestyle12single.blogspot.com/ for the remix.

this song is just as slammin' today as it was when rocketed to #2 on billboard's hot 100 in the spring of 1990. damn! i am old! this song is almost 20 years old. anywho, has anyone heard the pussycat doll cover of this tune? honey, it is absolutely murder. save your ears and just into (again) these mixes.
